Family Medicine Residency
Family Medicine ResidencyFirelands Regional Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency is dedicated to developing physicians who are highly skilled and qualified to manage the many aspects of family medicine – including ambulatory care, preventive medicine, chronic disease management, inpatient medicine, office procedures and practice management. Our residents are highly respected throughout the hospital and enjoy tremendous opportunities for hands-on learning. Many of our graduates have successfully entered into fellowship training, and others have excelled in providing leadership in local, state and national organizations.

Our three year curriculum fulfills the requirements of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, yet allows for flexibility to meet the educational needs of each resident. Though most inpatient rotations are at Firelands, residents also rotate through other local community hospitals, including Fisher-Titus Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital, and Fremont Memorial Hospital. Structured training in end-of-life care and nursing home medicine are included in the curriculum. Our state-of-the-art conference center hosts high quality didactic lectures, including bi-monthly OMM training sessions, monthly hospital-wide medical grand rounds, journal clubs, and weekly cancer conferences. Our monthly practice management series offers extensive training in the business aspects of medicine, including such topics as contract negotiation, medico-legal concerns, risk management, and billing/coding.

Ambulatory primary care training occurs at the well-equipped Family Health Services of Erie County (FHSEC) clinic. Operating as a community health center, FHSEC is committed to providing high quality comprehensive primary and preventative health care services to patients without financial barriers. Residents see their own panel of patients in this modern facility – with OGME-1 residents working one ½ day per week, and OGME-2 and OGME-3 residents working three ½ days per week. An EMR is utilized which allows for clinical documentation on-site as well as at home. Office procedures are emphasized, including OMT, colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, joint injections, minor skin surgery, cryosurgery, spirometry, and nasopharyngoscopy. Residents receive opportunities to teach and mentor medical students who rotate through the clinic on their family medicine rotation.

In addition, Firelands Regional Medical Center also co-sponsors a medical clinic on Kelley’s Island, one of the picturesque Lake Erie Islands. Residents travel to this bi-monthly clinic via ferry or airplane to offer primary care services to the island’s year-round residents.
