Admission Checklist
Admission Requirements for all Applicants to the School of Nursing
  • Applicants for admission submit an application after completion of the junior year of high school. A fee of $25.00 must be sent with the application form.
  • Graduation from high school or satisfactory performance on the General Education Development (G.E.D.) Test.
  • Must have achieved high school graduation requirements as delineated by the Ohio Department of Education. Completion of one credit hour in each of the following high school courses is required: Algebra, Biology, and Chemistry. Applicants should be in the upper half of their graduating class.
  • High school transcript including, if applicable, a *G.E.D. test score. (Applicants who have passed the G.E.D. test must have passed courses in algebra, chemistry and biology.
  • Transcripts from all other colleges and universities
  • Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS): score of at least proficient. Applicants with an earned baccalaureate degree from a nationally accredited institution are exempt from this requirement.
  • Three references from individuals who know the applicant (teachers, clergy, employers). A relative may not give a reference.
  • A personal interview is required prior to enrollment.
  • Accepted applicants will be required to complete a:
    a.
    Drug screen
    b.
    Criminal background investigation

Admission Requirements for LPNs (LPN to RN Programs)
LPNs complete the same application process as regular students, but are admitted with advanced standing in the program. A few different requirements are needed from LPN applicants:
  • Licensed practical nurses who apply for advanced standing must request that a transcript of the final record from the school of practical nursing be sent to the school of nursing. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in the LPN program is required.
  • LPNs, at least one year's employment as a licensed practical nurse is required. LPNs with less than one year of employment will be evaluated for admission on a case by case basis. The applicant must request that an evaluation of nursing performance by the employer be sent to the School of Nursing. The employer evaluation will be accepted in lieu of character references.
  • All accepted applicants who are LPNs, must hold a current, valid license in Ohio; must be authorized by the Ohio Board of Nursing to perform intravenous therapy procedures; must have completed all practical nursing courses with a "C" or better and must successfully complete the ACCESS LPN-to-RN Transition Course prior to enrollment in nursing courses.
  • All accepted applicants who are LPNs, must enroll in nursing courses within twelve months of completion of the ACCESS LPN-to-RN Transition Course.
  • Licensed Practical Nurses may take the ACCESS LPN-to-RN Transition Course only once.
  • Fast LANE LPN to RN applicants are not required to complete high school biology prior to admission or to complete BGSU Firelands College placement tests.
  • Applicants, who are Licensed Practical Nurses, are considered as admissions with advanced standing.
Admission Requirements for Transfer Students
  • Transfer students who wish to enter the school of nursing in the second year must have a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher at the last school attended.
  • The determination of transfer credit and the placement of the applicant in the program will be based on a review of the applicant’s official transcript(s) and supporting documents.
  • Credit for non-nursing courses is accepted after evaluation of the transcript and course descriptions by Bowling Green State University.
  • A grade of C or better in a course from another accredited institution is required for transfer credit to be granted.
  • Transfer credit for physical science courses will only be accepted if the courses are not more than 10 years old.
  • Fifteen semester hours towards the Associate of Science Degree must be completed by the student at BGSU Firelands College.
  • Transfer credit for nursing courses will be granted if the courses come from a nursing education program accredited by a national nursing accrediting body (NLNAC, CCNE). The Director will review course descriptions of all nursing courses completed at another nursing program to determine which courses will be transferrable. Transfer students who have completed professional nursing courses at another institution must successfully complete a demonstration of basic nursing skills and assessment techniques prior to registering for FRMCSN nursing courses. This demonstration is arranged through the FRMCSN Skills Laboratory Coordinator.
