Mary Bauer Recognized as July Beacon of Light
July 14, 2017 – Sandusky, Ohio -- Firelands Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce that Mary Bauer, RN, has been selected as the July Beacon of Light. Mary is the Patient Navigator with the Center for Breast Care at Firelands Regional Medical Center.
The Firelands Beacon of Light is a monthly award given to team members who exemplify and exhibit the values of Firelands Regional Medical Center in the areas of service, integrity, respect, unity and stewardship along with their commitment as a member of our community.
Mary began her employment at Firelands in 1977 and worked in ER, 4N, ICCU, and 3W as a staff nurse and transferred to become the Staff and Community Educator in 1995. Mary’s commitment to providing the best care to all patients quickly resulted in her promotion of Director, Community Outreach in 2004.
In 2014, the concept of establishing a Center for Breast Care came to fruition. Mary’s enthusiasm to be able to participate and develop a new program was over shadowed, once again, by her desire to provide the best care to our breast cancer patients.
“When anyone passes Mary in the hall her smile is contagious and sincere,” her nomination read. “There has not been one time that I have passed Mary in the hall that she doesn’t tell me that she ‘loves her job.’ Her warmth and glow is apparent wherever she goes. Mary can’t begin to realize what that means to her patients, families, and peers, and the entire healthcare team at Firelands.”
A typical day for Mary often begins with the patient during one of the scariest times of their lives, the news of an abnormal mammogram. She counsels, listens, and teaches coping skills to each patient as an individual with individual needs and at times has been known to come in on her day off. Mary makes appointments with physicians, is with the patient during a biopsy, and follows them side by side through the first treatment and supports them throughout their journey to the road to recovery.
Mary lives in Sandusky with her husband, Dan, and has two grown children – Lisa and Kevin.
