Sara Massello Becomes Certified HIPAA Compliance Officer

(July 2, 2018 – Sandusky, Ohio) Firelands Regional Medical Center’s HIPAA Privacy Officer, Sara Massello, MBA, has recently earned certification as a HIPAA Compliance Officer (CHCO).

The certification was awarded through the American Institute of Healthcare Compliance (AIHC), which provides education, certification and continuing education to health care administrators to improve competency in the management of medical facilities in the increasing complex regulatory environment at a reasonable cost.

“My hope is that these certifications will allow me to continue building a strong HIPAA program for Firelands patients, the organization itself, and for its employees,” said Massello.

A HIPAA Privacy Officer is responsible for developing a HIPAA-compliant privacy program if one does not already exist or – if a privacy program is already in place – for ensuring privacy policies to protect the integrity of protected health information (PHI) are enforced. He or she delivers or oversees ongoing employee privacy training, conducts risk assessments, and develops HIPAA-compliant procedures where necessary.

“I am very dedicated and committed to my profession and to Firelands Regional Medical Center, which is the number one reason why I wanted to acquire my Certification as a Certified HIPAA Compliance Officer (CHCO),” said Massello. “My goal going forward is to become certified as a Healthcare Auditor (CHA) and a Certified Officer of Healthcare Compliance (OHCC).”

Massello has been employed with Firelands for almost three years. She resides in Huron with her husband, Stephen.
