Firelands Regional Medical Center Recognized Again by Ohio First Steps for Healthy Babies, OBA & OLCA
Firelands Regional Medical Center (Firelands) is taking steps to promote its support of successful breastfeeding in our community, and their effort is not going unnoticed.
Recently, the Center for Women and Newborn at Firelands has once again received the Five Star Recognition from First Steps Ohio. The award is given to hospitals that promote, protect, and support breastfeeding. The Ohio First Steps for Healthy Babies is a voluntary breastfeeding designation program through the Ohio Hospital Association and Ohio Department of Health that recognizes maternity centers in Ohio for taking steps to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding in their organization.
Additionally, they were also awarded a Maternity Care Best Practice Award 2018 from Ohio Hospital Association, Ohio Department of Health, Ohio Breastfeeding Alliance, and Ohio Lactation Consultant Association, in recognition of being a “bag free” facility.
“Being a “bag free” obstetrics unit supports breastfeeding by excluding the practice of supplying free formula samples in diaper bags that formula companies prefer to have distributed to all moms. It is very rewarding to know that the Center for Women and Newborn participates in breastfeeding initiatives that support and educate Moms regarding healthy feeding choices best suited for their baby and themselves,” said Jennifer Rickard, MSN, RN, CSRN, director, at Firelands Regional Medical Center’s Center for Women and Newborn Services.
In addition to this commitment, Firelands Regional Medical Center is providing information and hospital practices supportive of breastfeeding and the Ohio First Steps for Healthy Babies program. Firelands provides lactation consultants, who are available to assist patients with all aspects of the breastfeeding process. A consultant visits with new mothers during their hospital stay, and they are available to patients both prenatally and after returning home. Community members are also encouraged to call 419-557-7596 for any breastfeeding questions.
