Celebration & Big Latch On Event is Back for 2021

(Sandusky, Ohio)  World Breastfeeding Week is recognized August 1- August 7, 2021, in commemoration of the 1990 Innocenti Declaration. The Innocenti Declaration was signed by government policymakers, WHO, UNICEF, and other organizations with the aim to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. Our community will be celebrating with a live and virtual event hosted by Firelands Area Breastfeeding Alliance on August 7. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action’s (WABA) theme this year is “Protect Breastfeeding – A Shared Responsibility.”  “Although support at the individual level is very important, breastfeeding must be considered a public health issue that requires investment at all levels. The concept of ‘building back better after the COVID 19 pandemic will provide an opportunity to create a warm chain of support for breastfeeding that includes health systems, workplaces, and communities at all levels of society.” (WABA statement on website May 2021)

Representatives from Firelands Regional Medical Center along with other community organizations will be hosting a Celebration & Big Latch On Event on August 7 at Osborn Park, Huron, Ohio. This event will have an option to attend virtually as well.  Check out the Firelands Area Breastfeeding Alliance Facebook page or call 419-557-7596 for more details. This event is part of The Global Big Latch On event which takes place around the world, where women gather together to breastfeed and offer support to each other.

Firelands Regional Medical Center offers a full lactation support program for women in our community. We have three International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) on staff at our hospital.  One of them will be here 7 days per week for assistance to our inpatient population. They also offer an outpatient lactation clinic, a weekly breastfeeding support group, and education classes. These services are available to anyone in our community.  Please call 419-557-7596 for more information.
