Firelands among Nation’s Top Performing Hospitals for Treatment of Heart Attack Patients

(Sandusky, Ohio) Firelands Regional Medical Center recently received the Platinum Performance Achievement Award, focused on chest pain, from the American College of Cardiology. The National Cardiovascular Data Registry provides data for hospitals to measure and track myocardial infarction (MI), otherwise known as a heart attack. Firelands is one of only 212 hospitals nationwide to receive this honor.

The award recognizes Firelands’ commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients. It signifies that Firelands has reached an elevated goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care. These levels of care are outlined by the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

To receive the chest pain - MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award, Firelands has demonstrated sustained achievement for two consecutive years, including 2019 and 2020, and performed at the highest level for specific performance measures. Full involvement in the registry engages hospitals in a vigorous quality improvement process. Data is used to drive improvements according to guidelines and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that almost 700,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include:

  • Administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge.
  • Timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery.
  • Smoking cessation counseling.
  • Cardiac rehabilitation.

“Our teams have worked very hard across multiple disciplines to develop best practices and consistently deliver exceptional care,“ stated Christine Ammanniti, Director of Cardiac Cath Lab & Chest Pain Center at Firelands Regional Medical Center. Chest pain - MI Registry empowers healthcare provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines. They establish a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety, and outcomes of care for patients with coronary syndrome artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack patients.
