Firelands Diabetes Education Service Merits ADA Recognition

(Sandusky, Ohio) The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recently recognized the Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) program at Firelands Health. The ADA believes that Firelands offers high-quality education that is an essential component of diabetes management.

The ADA Education Recognition effort is a voluntary process that assures that approved education services have met the national standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education. Organizations who achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide participants with extensive information about diabetes management.

“Self-care is one of the primary goals of the ADA Education Recognition Program (ERP) at Firelands,” said Dawn Fitt, Manager and Clinical Pharmacist at Firelands Center for Coordinated Care. “Through the support of the health care team and increased education on diabetes, the patient can assume a major part of the responsibility for their diabetes management.” Self-management education may prevent unnecessary hospital admissions and some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes. Fitt went on to say, “our patients receive a high-quality service at Firelands’ Center for Coordinated Care.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2020 National Diabetes Statistic Report, over 34 million people, or 10.5% of the population in the United States, have diabetes. Each day more than 3,900 people are diagnosed with diabetes.

Diabetes is a life-changing diagnosis. Many people will first learn they have diabetes when treated for one of its life-threatening complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, nerve disease, and amputation. The Diabetes Care Center at Firelands Health is a multi-disciplinary program that provides evaluation and treatment, as well as education of diabetes or diabetes-related conditions, including prediabetes, Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
