(Sandusky, Ohio) Have you always dreamed of being a nurse? Maybe you know someone who is interested in pursuing a career in nursing. The enrollment process for Firelands Regional Medical Center School of Nursing is now open for the 2023-2024 school year and anyone who is interested can apply now. “There is a significant need in our community for registered nurses, and you can receive the training required at our school of nursing,” explained Dawn Wikel, the director at Firelands Regional Medical Center School of Nursing, who is a nurse herself. The program offers students the opportunity to pursue a registered nurse (RN) diploma or transition from a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to an RN. Wikel went on to say, “Our program is very robust. Nursing students will receive individualized attention from the experienced faculty and staff and participate in a wide variety of hands-on clinical experience.” Those who are interested can apply at any time at firelands.com/schoolofnursing. There is currently no waitlist for clinical.

With a history dating back to 1905, Firelands Regional Medical Center School of Nursing, previously known as Providence Hospital School of Nursing, has a long-standing reputation for excellence in nursing education. The school of nursing, located in Sandusky, Ohio, is ranked the 16th best nursing program of 96 RN programs in the state of Ohio. The school of nursing is based at Firelands South Campus on Hayes Avenue, however, many rotations include working on the nursing units and interacting with nurses and other healthcare professionals directly in the field at the medical center. “Our students find this hands-on experience to be invaluable and can join the workforce in as little as two to three years,” Wikel stated. “Our graduates can seamlessly transition to a bachelor prepared nurse after one year of RN to BSN coursework with our educational partners at Bowling Green State University. We are the only program in the region that offers an experience like this.”

According to BLS.gov, “About 194,500 openings for registered nurses are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.” Nurses are in high demand, and graduates of this program will be able to network in the Firelands’ health system, which will benefit them if they were to apply to Firelands Regional Medical Center upon graduation. Wikel explained, “Many of our graduates stay in the area to continue working at the medical center and support the local community.”
