Dr. Alexandra Prosser Earns CLC Certification

(Sandusky, Ohio) Alexandra Prosser, M.D., a member of Firelands Regional Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program, recently earned a certification as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) through the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP).

ALPP is a nonprofit organization that provides a national certification program in breastfeeding and human lactation for physicians, nurses, dietitians and other allied health professionals. The CLC certification will allow Dr. Prosser to better care for women and infants by ensuring they receive up-to-date, evidence-based care and support.

“Breastfeeding medicine is a medical niche which provides additional support and assistance to mothers and infants experiencing challenges with breastfeeding. The most common challenge with breastfeeding is obtaining a comfortable and efficient latch,” explained Dr. Prosser. “Sometimes however there are additional factors that make breastfeeding challenging, such as pain, infections, medications and medical conditions that requires a close relationship between the lactation consultants and a physician.”

During her final year as a family medicine resident, Dr. Prosser is collaborating with the lactation consultants at Firelands to provide optimal support to breastfeeding parents and infants. Firelands Center for Women & Newborns offers a range of lactation support services for women during their breastfeeding experience:

  • Inpatient and outpatient consultations with certified lactation consultants
  • Breastfeeding Basics class teaches new parents the benefits of breastfeeding and how to successfully breast-feed their baby
  • Breastfeeding Mom-Baby Group assists breastfeeding mothers with questions or concerns and offers breastfeeding support
