Firelands Medical Education Celebrates 2023 Graduation

(Sandusky, Ohio) The Sandusky Yacht Club served as the backdrop as eight physicians were recognized during the 41st graduation ceremony for Firelands Regional Medical Center’s medical education program.

On May 31, Dr. Eric Mast, director of the family medicine residency, recognized the following graduates:

  • Emily Cox, D.O.
  • Christian Lowrie, D.O.
  • Sohail Merchant, M.D.
  • Alexandra Prosser, M.D., CLC

Dr. Kristopher Lindbloom, director of the transitional year residency, recognized the following graduates:

  • Nina Grillis, D.O., who will continue her residency training in radiology at the University of Toledo.
  • Rebecca Howard, M.D., who will continue her residency training in family medicine at Firelands Regional Medical Center.
  • Nyokabi Kamau, D.O., who will continue her residency training in radiology at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio.
  • Kirsten Ponsart, D.O., who will continue her residency training in anesthesiology at MetroHealth in Cleveland, Ohio.

Firelands Health Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Normington-Slay and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Scott Campbell provided welcoming comments to the graduates and those in attendance.

After receiving their awards and certificates, graduates presented awards to area physicians who were instrumental in providing instruction and guidance during their education. Dr. Christopher Avendano was recognized as the family medicine residency preceptor of the year. Dr. Shawn Warner was recognized as the transitional year residency preceptor of the year.

The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Outstanding Physician Awards were presented to Dr. Reagan Bristol (primary care physician); Dr. Joseph Riley (specialty care physician); Dr. Andrei Popescu (primary care specialty physician); and Dr. Melissa Malek (resident physician).
