Firelands Physician Group welcomes gastroenterologist
(Sandusky, Ohio) Imad Asaad, M.D., recently joined the Firelands Physician Group gastroenterology office with Lawrence R. McCormack, M.D., and Cameron Ditty, M.D. Dr. Asaad is a gastroenterologist and hepatologist, and has knowledge in evaluating and managing patients with chronic liver diseases, including viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis and metabolic liver diseases. He earned his doctor of medicine at the University of Aleppo School of Medicine in Aleppo, Syria and completed his internal medicine residency at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, New York. Dr. Asaad also completed fellowship training in gastroenterology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine/MetroHealth in Cleveland, and a transplant hepatology fellowship at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
“What I like most about gastroenterology, is the procedural aspects of the job,” said Dr. Asaad. “It's not only about the medical knowledge, but also includes working with patients each and every day and applying the skills I have learned.” Before joining Firelands Health, Dr. Asaad was an assistant professor of medicine at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. He was recognized for building the Cleveland Clinic hepatology program in the West region. Before that, he led the liver clinic at MetroHealth Medical Center.
Hepatology is a subspecialty of gastroenterology, which focuses on liver health, and is a new service offered at Firelands Physician Group. “This specialty has generally existed only at big centers,” explained Dr. Asaad. “If you wanted to see a hepatologist in the past, you would have had to travel an hour east or west.” Dr. Asaad expressed his excitement to bring hepatology to the greater Sandusky region. “Liver diseases are under-diagnosed, especially fatty liver. One in three Americans have fatty liver. It’s important to me to provide this care in a region where there aren’t many options for patients to choose from.”
