Firelands Health celebrates milestone for robotic-assisted knee surgeries

(Sandusky, Ohio) Robert Carlisle II, M.D., orthopedic surgeon with Firelands Physician Group, recently performed his 100th knee surgery using a robotic surgical assistant (ROSA) at Firelands Regional Medical Center.

ROSA allows orthopedic surgeons to tailor the placement of each patient’s total knee implant for a precise fit. Dr. Carlisle uses the data collected before and during surgery from ROSA to make more informed decisions based on the patient’s unique anatomy that may affect the fit of the knee implant.

"Data from ROSA provides the best accuracy and precision possible," said Dr. Carlisle. "I know when I leave the operating room, the knee is well aligned, well balanced and it’s going to perform well for the patient."

Performing robotic assisted surgeries with ROSA provides several patient benefits, like:

  • Less time in the hospital, likely same day discharge
  • Reduced pain and discomfort due to less tissue dissection
  • Faster recovery time and return to normal activities

"There are a lot of people involved, not only during the surgery, but behind the scenes who come together for a good patient outcome," said Dr. Carlisle.
