Firelands ANCC accredited for nursing development efforts

(Sandusky, Ohio) Firelands Health was granted accreditation for nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This accreditation demonstrates Firelands’ excellence when educating its nurses in evidence-based practices. Firelands was recognized for developing high-quality educational activities to help promote the professional growth of its nurses.

A nursing clinical ladder is an educational method that challenges nurses to learn and sharpen their skills while in the field. They are required to perform continuing education annually, yet they do not have to leave their job in the clinical setting to make educational progress. Here are examples of what differentiates the rigorous education that is expected of nurses at Firelands Health:

  • Cross-education from peers sharpens nurses’ skills in various disciplines: catheters, vein pressure monitoring, local anesthesia, preparing for technical downtime, post-surgical recovery complications, chest tubes, just to name a few.
  • Clinical skills lab training with the intensive care unit, emergency department and nursing departments.
  • Peer reviews for annual nursing competencies.
  • Certifications for disciplines like the operating room, emergency department, post-anesthesia and sedation.
  • Advanced degrees – masters in Nursing Education
  • Participation in organizational professional committees, volunteerism and community activities and the medical center Guardian Angel program.

“I am proud of this organization for achieving the ANCC accreditation,” explained Education Services Director Connie Dagg. “To our patients in the communities we serve, this means they can rest assured that their caretaker is continuously learning and sharpening their skills. Patients are cared for by a nurse trained with the latest evidenced-based practices as well as Firelands’ values of attitude, commitment and enthusiasm. This is a team effort, and it’s a joy to work with my fellow educators.”

The ANCC Accreditation Model is based on a framework of structure, process and outcome measures to evaluate quality. The ANCC standards provide organizations with a structured, evidence-based framework to design and implement NCPD activities. The development of quality outcomes ensures that accredited organizations continuously evaluate processes and their impact on the professional development of nurses.
