Being “plugged in” to technology has wonderful benefits. But there are times that technology can become an overpowering part of our lives.

On the downside, roughly one in five cell owners say that their phone has made it at least somewhat harder to forget about work at home or on the weekends; to give people their undivided attention; or to focus on a single task without being distracted.

Summer is a great time to put down your phone and enjoy the world around you, through your own eyes – not through your cell phone. Take these quick tips to unplug into consideration.

  1. Challenge yourself to take a break. See if you can schedule a full day of being “unplugged.” Can’t do a full day? Start with a few hours and work your way up to a full day.
  2. Unplug together. See if you can get other people in your house, your family, or co-workers to unplug with you. Having the support of others can make it fun, but also create accountability.
  3. Identify technology-free areas. Start with one or two specific rooms in your house. You may find an improvement in your sleep if your bedroom is technology-free.
  4. Plan technology-free activities. Technology-free meal times are one example. You may find better conversation around the table. When you go to an event try and stay off your technology for a portion of the time.
