Weight Management & Nutrition Clinic
The Weight Management and Nutrition Clinic at Firelands Regional Medical Center was established to assist physicians in providing safe and effective management of patients needing treatment and support in achieving a healthy weight and the lifestyle needed to maintain that weight. The clinic is staffed by a nurse practitioner, a registered pharmacist, a registered dietitian and nurses, in conjunction with a physician specializing in weight management, physical therapists and behavior management specialists.
Why is a weight management and nutrition clinic needed?
Weight management is a challenging issue for an ever-increasing percentage of our patient population. Many patients have tried various diets in the past with limited or unsustainable levels of success. In order to facilitate healthy, sustainable weight management, we have combined multiple disciplines into a team in order to create a comprehensive, individualized program to meet the needs of each specific patient. We support and monitor their progress, teach them life skills and tools to meet and sustain their goals, and help them to understand and overcome the barriers to their success.
How do I enroll in the weight management and nutrition clinic?
Any patient with a BMI of 30 or above may be enrolled. Your physician must complete and send a referral form to the weight management and nutrition clinic. This physician must be someone whom you intend to continue to visit at least once a year. You must be willing to come in for an initial two to three hour appointment with our clinic staff, followed by shorter visits at weekly intervals. You must be willing to attend weight management and nutrition classes, physical therapy evaluation and sessions, physician visits, support groups, and dietitian visits. The core program is completed in twelve to thirteen weeks. Additional time may be added as needed.
What is the procedure for follow-up in the weight management and nutrition clinic?
After the clinic receives a completed referral form, you will be contacted by the patient navigator at the clinic to discuss your therapy and to arrange your first appointment, as well as coordinate with the physician and physical therapy to initiate your contact with them. During your initial appointment, the nurse will ask questions about your health, diet, medical history, sleep history and medications. Specific screenings will be performed. You will meet with the dietitian for approximately 60-75 minutes for nutritional evaluation and education. You will meet with the pharmacist for a review of current medications, administration, side effects, interactions and effectiveness.
