Pediatric Outpatient Clinics

Firelands Regional Medical Center works together with University Hospitals (UH) Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, Promedica Toledo Children’s Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation to provide specialized outpatient diagnostic and treatment services for children from birth to age 18 by conducting pediatric outpatient clinics. All pediatric clinics are staffed by a Board Certified Pediatric Specialist.

In addition, all pediatric specialty clinics, with the exception of the pediatric cardiology clinic, are held at Firelands South Campus, 1912 Hayes Ave., Sandusky. The pediatric cardiology clinic is held at Firelands Main Campus, 1111 Hayes Ave.

Children with limited functioning or chronic pain due to a medical condition
or injury may benefit from the services of a pediatric physiatrist. Because
they are highly specialized, most pediatric physiatrists practice in hospitals
in larger cities. To meet the need of area families, Firelands Regional Medical
Center sponsors the Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic in
conjunction with Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for Rehabilitation.

Staffed by Douglas Henry, MD, Pediatric Physiatrist, and Janet Zaibek, RN,
the clinic is held the 2nd Tuesday of every other month from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
at Firelands Regional Medical Center’s South Campus Outpatient Clinic
Department.

Dr. Henry works with the child’s family to determine an appropriate
rehabilitation program to help the child increase his or her independence
and to live within the least restrictive means. He provides a comprehensive
evaluation and collaborates with the family’s pediatrician and other
specialists to coordinate individualized care plans. He also provides medical
management of the disabling condition, such as treatments for spasticity and
chronic musculoskeletal pain. Parents are provided education to help them
better understand their child’s condition, what to expect functionally moving
forward, and how to help the child continue rehabilitation at home.

Once a care plan is developed, Dr. Henry works closely with the physical and
occupational therapists and speech/language pathologists of the Firelands
Children’s S.P.O.T.

“I rely on the therapists quite a bit to keep me informed of the patient’s
progress,” says Dr. Henry. “They see the children on a regular basis and know
how well they are responding to the therapies we have prescribed. We have
an open line of communication to discuss patients whenever needed.”

Conditions treated by Dr. Henry at the Children’s S.P.O.T. include:

  • Developmental orthopedic conditions (non-surgical)
  • Muscle and nerve disorders
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Sports injuries/musculoskeletal complaints
  • Childhood stroke
  • Gross/fine motor delay
