Firelands Regional Medical Center School of Nursing offers courses that explore a range of topics, from the foundational concepts of nursing to concepts of critical care and patient care management. All courses are taught by qualified and experienced faculty who strive to model compassion and professionalism to their students. Below you will find the required courses for the RN Program Curriculum.
Nursing Foundations
The first nursing course provides a general background in healthcare and the roles of the professional registered nurse, including evidence-based practice as well as the components of the nursing process and clinical judgment. Psychomotor skills necessary to assist the individual to meet basic needs are developed. Emphasis is placed on physical assessment, communication, safety, infection control, spiritual/cultural and legal/ethical considerations. Nursing care related to sensory, integumentary, oxygenation, mobility, nutrition, elimination, fluid and electrolytes, pain and perioperative nursing are introduced. The principles of drug administration and pharmacology are established. Nursing Foundations is presented in the fall semester. This course is taken in the second year.

Medical Surgical Nursing
This course centers on the assessment and nursing care of adult clients with disorders affecting the respiratory, endocrine, musculoskeletal, sensory, neurological, gastrointestinal, renal, male reproductive systems, and cancer-related conditions. Theory content focuses on client and family education, as well as cultural and spiritual considerations in care. The course also includes content related to nutritional management, pharmacologic therapies, gerontological considerations and community support resources. Students apply the nursing process and their clinical judgment to provide care for diverse adult clients across a range of clinical settings. The course is offered in the spring semester. This course is taken in the second year.

Psychiatric Nursing
This course focuses on the assessment of common mental health disorders, including prevention, treatment, and related nursing care. Theory addresses therapeutic and non-therapeutic communication, crisis intervention, end-of-life care, patient and family education needs, community resources, pharmacotherapy, gerontology and the influence of cultural, ethnic, and social diversity in practice. Students explore a range of care environments, from acute inpatient to community-based settings. This course is offered in a blended format; 25% of the course content is completed through online learning assignments or activities. The course is offered in the summer semester. This course is taken in the third year.

Maternal Child Nursing
This course focuses on the nursing care of the childbearing family and children from infancy through adolescence during health and illness in a variety of settings. Principles of growth and development are woven throughout the course and correlated with the nursing process to support safe and effective nursing care across the lifespan. Decision-making and clinical judgment are expanded to include the concepts of diversity, legal, moral, and ethical issues. A variety of approaches that incorporate cultural and physical considerations are emphasized to promote family-centered care of mothers, infants, and children. Concurrent clinical experience is provided in the hospital and community. This course is offered in a blended format; 25% of the course content is completed through online learning assignments or activities. The course is offered in the fall semester. This course is taken in the third year.

Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing
This course focuses on the application of the nursing process and clinical judgment in the care of patients with complex health conditions. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based practice, management of diverse patient populations, and the roles and responsibilities of the professional nurse. Course content includes patient and family education, discharge planning, pharmacotherapy, leadership and management, professional career planning, employment preparation, and ongoing professional development. Patient advocacy and the development of a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to meeting patient and family needs are emphasized throughout the course. Clinical experience is gained through rotations in special care units, medical-surgical units, and a variety of hospital-based healthcare settings. The course is offered in the spring semester. This course is taken in the third year.
