We pay close attention to our kids swimming at the beach or playing in the pool. We would never leave them unattended near water, even in the tub. Would you guess that drowning is the most common cause of death in children aged 1 to 4? According to data collected by the CDC, it’s true. It remains the second leading cause of unintentional death in children up to age 14. The statistics are alarming, but parents can learn how to recognize the signs of danger and know what to do.

What is Dry Drowning and Secondary or Delayed Drowning

Dry drowning occurs when a child inhales water through their mouth or nose, but it doesn’t reach the lungs. The muscles in their airway spasm, causing the child’s airway to be blocked entirely, preventing them from breathing.

Secondary or delayed drowning is a term used to describe the delayed symptoms children may experience after a near-drowning event. It happens if water gets into the lungs. It can irritate the lining of the lungs, and fluid can build up, causing a condition called pulmonary edema. This drowns the child from the inside, causing suffocation.

Signs of Dry Drowning and Secondary Drowning in Children

You should have your child checked by emergency professionals or a doctor right away if you notice any of the following symptoms within 12 hours of submersion in water:

  • Heavy or persistent coughing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Rapid breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Throwing up
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
