Importance of Annual Lab Screenings

Why is it important to get annual blood tests?

During your annual check-up, your primary care provider may order blood tests to see how well your body is functioning. Annual blood tests are important because they give your primary care provider a comprehensive overview of your health.

Blood tests are also crucial for early detection and intervention; if a certain test result is flagged, this may indicate that you need additional diagnostic testing.  Blood tests can identify potential health issues, so take a proactive approach to your health and get these tests done at least once a year.

Common types of blood tests that should be done yearly:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): This blood test checks your red and white blood cells, platelets and hemoglobin.
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP): This blood test assesses your kidney function, electrolytes, blood sugar, liver function and proteins.
  • Lipid Panel: This blood test measures cholesterol levels (HDL, LDL and total) and triglycerides.

Let your primary care provider know if you have any questions about these and other blood tests.

Remember, regular lab screenings are an essential part of helping you stay healthy, and they can go a long way in giving you peace of mind and reassurance in terms of how your body and its internal systems are functioning.
