Small gestures can make a world of difference

A patient receiving dialysis treatment

Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for individuals with end-stage kidney disease. The process involves filtering toxins and excess fluid from the body, a task the kidneys can no longer perform effectively. This treatment often takes several hours, and patients typically undergo sessions three days a week.

Dialysis can significantly extend patients' lives, but it can also be both physically and emotionally taxing. Patients often endure multiple, lengthy treatment sessions each week and may experience various side effects, including feeling cold, nausea, fatigue or other symptoms. These treatments typically occur early in the morning or evening to minimally disrupt daily routines.

Linda Ann Fries, a dialysis patient, draws her strength from her family. “My children and grandchildren are important to me, and they want me to continue living,” she shared. Some days are hard for her, getting up at 4 a.m., but her family’s unwavering support keeps her going.

Making a difference through donation

The blankets donated for dialysis patients.

Recognizing the comfort needs of their patients, the staff at the Firelands Health Dialysis Center approached The Foundation for Firelands to address a common issue: feeling cold during and after treatment. In response, the foundation initiated a program to provide new patients with a warm blanket and a carrying bag. Since its launch in January 2024, The Foundation for Firelands has provided 88 blankets to dialysis patients, thanks to the support of donors.

Already grateful to be receiving lifesaving treatment, Linda was pleasantly surprised when she received her blanket. “I didn’t expect it,” she said, “I’ve already been given a gift of life.” Linda takes her blanket with her to every treatment.

In the midst of the complexities of dialysis, a small gesture of a warm blanket can make a world of difference for patients. This simple act of kindness provides comfort and support for those facing the challenges of chronic kidney disease.

You can help provide this comfort to others. To support this and other initiatives like it, you can make a gift to The Foundation for Firelands. Visit foundationforfirelands.com/donate or call 419-557-7150 to make a gift by phone.
