Get to Know Your Orthopedic Doctor: Colleen Calvey, MD

Get to know your orthopedic doctor Colleen Calvey MDOur hands are the primary way we interact with the world and with each other. A problem in hand, such as a disruption in sensation, movement, or muscle contraction, can interfere with simple and complicated tasks.

Patients requiring hand or upper extremity surgery no longer need to travel out of the area to receive specialized care. As an orthopedic doctor, Colleen Calvey, MD, brings this expertise to the area.

Dr. Calvey, who joined Sandusky Orthopedics in November 2015, completed her residency in orthopedic surgery at Akron General Medical Center (now a Cleveland Clinic hospital) and her fellowship in hand and micro-surgery at the Christine M. Kleinert Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. She is now one of the top orthopedic surgeons at Firelands Physician Group Sandusky Orthopedics.

"My undergraduate degree is in music and I made a career of that for a couple of years," said Dr. Calvey. "When I decided to go into medicine, surgery seemed like a natural fit for me. Both music and surgery require technical precision."

No matter the patient's age, including adult and pediatric patients, orthopedic doctors like Dr. Calvey are able to provide treatment for a variety of conditions involving the upper extremities, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Fractures and dislocations tendinitis (such as trigger finger)
  • Joint contractures
  • Lacerations to arteries in the hand
  • Ligament or tendon lacerations or injuries
  • Nerve lacerations or injuries (such as carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Tumors and cancers of the bone, muscle, and skin

An Orthopedic Doctor Specializing in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery

Not only do our hands allow us to go about our day with simple tasks, such as eating, drinking, dressing, or driving our car; but they also allow us to support our families, earn a wage, maintain our homes, and pursue our hobbies in sports, music, and the arts. A simple touch can give us valuable information about an object or our environment or deliver comfort to a crying child or someone in need, and a simple handshake can transform a stranger into a new friend or seal a business deal.

"The musculoskeletal system is very complicated and is even more intricate in hand," the orthopedic doctor said. "Hand and microsurgery are very fine, meticulous, and tedious work. It is not for everyone, but I love it. I liked that I could fix broken bones and restore joints. More than that though, I liked that I could help people improve their daily lives."

When a problem occurs in this essential part of the body, specialized care can be found close to home. Hand surgeons are specially trained to provide nonsurgical and surgical care for problems involving the hand, wrist, forearm, and occasionally the elbow or shoulder, so patients can get back to doing small and complicated tasks. Patients can get back to life.

"When patients recover from orthopedic surgery, they go back to living," said Dr. Calvey. "I like helping people to be able to do the things that make life worth living."
