Supporting breastfeeding mothers

Becoming a mother is a life-changing experience. Breastfeeding is one way a mother can not only feed her baby but also bond with and provide the healthiest start to their growth and development. A mother's breastmilk is perfectly composed of nutrients the baby specifically needs.
Breastfeeding has many benefits for both mom and baby. Some benefits for moms include reducing the risks of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and developing postpartum depression. Some benefits for the baby include helping to build a strong immune system, promoting gut health, and reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
While breastfeeding is natural, it is a skill both mom and baby have to learn. Some women experience painful feeds, difficulty latching, or low milk supply concerns. With the proper support and quick intervention when breastfeeding becomes challenging, moms can successfully meet their breastfeeding goals.
"We are here for you and your baby throughout your entire breastfeeding journey, however that may look for you," says Firelands Health lactation specialist Becky Smith. "Each journey can look a little or a lot different, but we’re happy to help you meet your breastfeeding goals."
There are ways to help prepare you for your baby's birth and learn basic breastfeeding techniques right after delivery. At Firelands Health, we strongly encourage mothers to attend our Breastfeeding Basics class to learn breastfeeding positions, optimal latching techniques and breast pumping.
While in the hospital, one of our lactation nurses will assist with latching and answering questions. We offer one-on-one outpatient appointments with our lactation nurses to evaluate weight gain, milk supply and any other breastfeeding concerns you may have. You can also drop in any time to our free Mom-Baby group, held every other Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
No matter where you are in your breastfeeding journey, the Firelands Health lactation department is here for you. Don't hesitate to call us at 419-557-7596 or email lactation@firelands.com. To learn more or register for our breastfeeding classes, go to firelands.com/maternity.
