An alternative to the CPAP | Inspire Sleep Upper Airway Stimulation

22% of all adults have Sleep Apnea, according to the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Sleep apnea can negatively impact your health, especially your cardiovascular system. If you have sleep apnea, you are:

  • 86% more likely to have a stroke.
  • 71% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease.
  • 48% more likely to develop coronary heart disease.

What if I don’t want to use a CPAP machine?

The use of a CPAP machine can be a good treatment plan for many patients. But for those who struggle to use the mask regularly, keep the machine clean, and bring their CPAP when they travel; the Inspire upper airway stimulation can be an alternative sleep apnea treatment.

What is Inspire?

Inspire is a surgical alternative to a CPAP machine. It is a small device placed under the skin of the neck and chest through two small incisions during a same-day outpatient procedure.

Firelands physicians have seen high satisfaction rights with their Inspire patients who have struggled with the CPAP machine.

To be a candidate for Inspire, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You are unable to use or get consistent benefits from CPAP.
  • Are free of total blockage in the area behind the roof of the mouth (soft palate)
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 37 or less
  • Have moderate to severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • You’re age 18 or above
