I went to medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University. I was in the Navy at that time, so my internship and residency in internal medicine was completed at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. I did a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Walter Reed National Military Medical

I have always known I wanted to be a doctor. When I was seventeen, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through a mastectomy and chemotherapy treatments, and thankfully, she is a survivor today. My family felt so helpless during this time. I knew then that I wanted to devote my life to helping patients and families navigate the uncertainties of dealing with cancer. I tell everyone that cancer can provide a tremendous learning experience and an opportunity for growth, in both good and bad ways. My own experience drives me every day and with every patient.

I knew I wanted to live and work in northern Ohio, near my hometown. I expressed interest in survivorship, family support and community oncology during my interview with University Hospitals, which is what I do now at Firelands. I think Sandusky is a great place to live, work and raise a family. Even though the center is affiliated with University Hospitals, my colleagues and I have gotten to tailor the program to meet the needs of the greater Sandusky community. Unlike practicing in a larger system, where each physician specializes in certain types of cancers, I treat a wide variety of cancers. I think the Firelands cancer care model is unique in that we are community-oriented, but we still have the resources of University Hospitals. Firelands has positioned itself with a wonderful medical staff. The Board of Directors has ensured that excellent physicians practice in each specialty and everyone is very collegial. We have a beautiful, calming environment that doesn’t feel institutional. We also offer a myriad of options for financial assistance that I’ve not seen in other organizations.

I think the community aspect of Firelands is particularly prominent and important in our cancer center, because our nurses and physicians are treating patients who are their neighbors, friends and loved ones. That is what makes Firelands unique and what makes my practice truly fulfilling.
