  • Treating Patients on Firelands Virtual Care

I went to medical school at The Ohio State University and then completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital. I returned to Ohio State for a residency in internal medicine, followed by a fellowship in Gastroenterology.

I always knew I wanted to go into internal medicine. I liked the academic nature of it, but I also wanted to do procedures. Gastroenterology allowed me to work with my hands and to add a surgical component to internal medicine. Initially, I wanted to go into cardiology. I had an offer to participate in a fellowship back at Yale in cardiology. Before I left for the program, I realized that maybe cardiology wasn’t for me. I decided to stay at Ohio State and do a fellowship in Gastroenterology instead. I sometimes wonder what would have happened had I gone back to Yale, but I am happy with the decision I made and with where I’ve ended up in my practice.

I was recruited by Dr. Larry McCormack to partner with him in practice 32 years ago here in Sandusky. I came to see the area on a beautiful September day and Dr. McCormack took me to the lake. I loved the lake and the beach at first sight. I continue to love living on the water. In my free time, I water ski and windsurf and do a lot of outdoor activities. In addition to the environment here in Sandusky, I was interested in the opportunity to build a successful practice in this area. When I first joined Dr. McCormack’s practice, we were the only people doing gastroenterology between Toledo and Cleveland. We were busy then and have remained so now, even in my own practice.

The administration here at Firelands has always been very supportive and cooperative with me as a physician. Whenever I’ve needed something, like a piece of equipment to better serve my patients, Firelands has accommodated me. I think that Firelands offers patients a personal touch that isn’t available in larger medical centers. This is a community-based facility, and it shows. I know a lot of the administration and physicians who practice here personally, and it gives me a sense of security. I think that everyone at Firelands shares the same values as I do: wanting to do what’s best for patients and providing excellent patient care.
