I completed my medical degree at Karachi Medical and Dental College in Karachi, Pakistan, where I am from. I completed my residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York. Then I worked in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania as a hospitalist, but my true passion was in nephrology, so I did a fellowship at Boston University.
My father came from a low socio-economic class in Pakistan, which made healthcare difficult to access. He was a farmer, but he always wanted to be a doctor. He spent nights studying to be a physician and went into general medicine. By the time I was in college, my family was reasonably wealthy. Yet, my father always remembered where he came from. He made time to care for the very poor, who otherwise may have gone without healthcare. This was very inspiring to me. When I was in college, one of my young relatives experienced renal failure. Because we could pay for private care, she received treatment. We had never experienced anything like this. My family was grateful for the care she received and the compassion shown by the staff and physicians. After that experience, I knew medicine and nephrology were my passions. I wanted to make a difference for people like her.
I really liked the town of Sandusky when I first visited. Sandusky has good schools, nice neighborhoods, and lots to do. It is amazing to me that people vacation here… and we get to live here! When I was looking for jobs, I prioritized areas that would be good places to raise my family. Sandusky truly has all we need. The first thing I noticed about Firelands was the friendly and engaging administrative team and physicians. The medical staff is very accessible, and collaboration is a high priority. This type of teamwork is not found everywhere. In addition, I love that I have seen nearly every type of patient. The practice cares for people from a large region in this area, so we see a lot of different diagnoses. We are very fortunate to have all of our specialty care contained in this one location. When we need to send a patient to another specialist, it is all right here. Because the institution is not spread out like medical centers in larger cities, this allows us to have more time with our patients. We can be more involved in patients’ disease care because Firelands offers such high-quality, comprehensive care.
