History
The Bellevue Hospital opened its doors in 1917 with 24 beds, and nine bassinets.
Expansions throughout the decades

1950s-60s: Expanded with more patient beds, a surgical suite, and a new laboratory.

1970s: Added a six-bed intensive care unit (ICU) and launched Ohio's first rural inpatient alcohol detox and rehab program (1978).

1980s: Established a rural cancer program with an outpatient oncology clinic and cardiac rehabilitation.

1990s: Completed a $3.7 million renovation project.
21st Century at The Bellevue Hospital

Early 2000s: The hospital added a sleep disorders lab, breast care program, and new imaging services.

2005: A 129,000-square-foot facility with a meditation walking trail was completed.

2022: Two DaVinci robotic surgical devices were added for less invasive surgeries.

2025: The Bellevue Hospital became Firelands Health The Bellevue Hospital.
The Bellevue Hospital Foundation
Today, the Foundation Board is active within the Hospital’s service area to build upon and further its mission. The goals of the Foundation are to assist in the expansion of community services in healthcare facilities; equipment; healthcare programs; educate and increase community participation in Foundation functions; and strengthen and increase the Hospital’s financial base.

Volunteers at The Bellevue Hospital welcome guests, escort patients and families, perform clerical duties and serve in the gift shop. To apply, please print and complete the application below, then return it to the volunteer coordinator at The Bellevue Hospital, located in the hospital's Gift Shop. You may also stop by the hospital Gift Shop to fill out the application.

Community Health Needs Assessments
The Bellevue Hospital is proud to be a member of Sandusky County Health Partners, which began in 1993. The goal of the Sandusky County Health Partners is to build a community that focuses on wellness, improves the population's overall health status, increases access to services, and addresses unmet needs. Through the assessment process of primary research, data analysis, validation and prioritization, key themes of need are identified.
