How speech-language pathologists can help
Speech-language pathologists work to prevent, evaluate and treat a range of functions, including:
- Speech disorders occur when an individual has trouble making speech sounds correctly. This can be caused by problems with how they move their mouth, lips, and tongue, or by difficulty planning the movements.
- Language disorders occur when someone has trouble understanding or using language. This can involve difficulty following directions, using the right words, or putting sentences together in a social or functional way. This can affect both spoken and written communication.
- Dysphagia is difficulty swallowing and typically occurs after an illness, injury, stroke or surgery.
- Fluency disorders affect the smoothness of speech, with stuttering and cluttering among the most common examples.
- Voice disorders occur when an individual has difficulties with their voice or resonance, including variation in pitch, hoarseness, or the inability to produce sound. Voice disorders may be the result of vocal abuse, vocal cord nodules/paralysis or neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease.
Occupational therapy
Occupational therapy focuses on enabling people to live their lives as independently as possible. Following an illness or injury, such as a stroke, brain injury, orthopedic surgery, or arm injury, occupational therapists work with patients to help them achieve the fullest possible participation in their daily activities and occupations.
