Cardiologist
Firelands Physician Group cardiologists provide advanced cardiac care in an outpatient setting to help the health of our community.
Heart rate monitors
Zio XT is a remote cardiac monitoring service that uses a wire-free ECG patch to detect and distinguish between harmless heart rhythm irregularities and potentially life-threatening problems. The monitor records and stores every heartbeat.
Based on their testing needs, patients wear the monitoring patch for 7-14 days. The wearer of the patch can press a button to register when they feel:

- Palpitations
- Missing beats
- Heartbeats faster than 100 beats per minute
- Heartbeats slower than 60 beats per minute
- Breathlessness
- Dizziness
The monitor wearer mails the patch to Zio. Once the device is received, a summary of the readings is sent to the cardiologists for review.
Heart failure clinic
Due to their complex needs, patients with heart failure are offered innovative outpatient services through our heart failure clinic. Patients have access to advanced therapies for diagnosis, treatment monitoring and management of all types of heart failure. Our physicians work with pharmacists to target effective medication therapy.
When appropriate, heart failure patients are provided with a remote monitoring system. The remote monitoring system provides our cardiologists with vital signs of weight, heart rate and blood pressure at regular intervals so we can intervene to help manage heart failure symptoms and avoid hospital admission.
We work with Zoll medical devices to make available an outpatient non-invasive heart failure management system that measures pulmonary fluid accumulation days before patients experience notable symptoms. Detecting this earlier gives the physician notice to intervene with the patient, avoiding admission to the hospital.
Genetic testing for heart conditions
With a swab of the cheek, we can test for genetic predispositions to heart conditions, which assists in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions.
Scan to reveal calcium deposits and blood flow in the heart arteries
With expertise in cardiac imaging, a Firelands Physician Group cardiologist can perform two new diagnostic tests that provide information about the blood flow to the heart. Firelands Regional Medical Center can perform calcium scoring imaging and coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) imaging. These two tests look at the calcium within and the blood flow through the heart arteries. These detailed images of the arteries in the heart are used to detect abnormal blood flow due to calcium buildup. Both calcium scoring testing and CCTA are non-invasive scans that use X-rays to take images of the heart and blood vessels.
