Children's S.P.O.T. | speech, physical, and occupational therapy
At Firelands Children’s S.P.O.T., we provide a playful, child-centered environment where therapy feels like fun and improves their function and confidence.
Each therapist integrates highly specialized training into therapeutic activities and works directly with parents to promote the child’s success in therapy. We look at the whole child and how their body functions, then reduce or eliminate barriers to development and focus on their strengths to build their undeveloped skills.
Physical therapy
The goal: Independence and mobility
Our therapists help children develop independence by learning motor skills such as rolling, sitting, crawling, walking, running, jumping and balancing. Physical therapy also assists with improving muscle strength, joint range of motion, postural strength, and the use of mobility aids.
Occupational therapy
The goal: Master daily life skills
Our therapists help children learn skills such as fine motor, motor planning, coping, self-help, feeding, sensory integration, and visual motor skills. These are critical for their success in self-care, school performance, and interaction.
Speech therapy
The Goal: Confident communication
Our speech therapists help children develop effective communication skills to be independent learners. Skills such as articulation, voice, fluency, cognition, auditory processing, verbal expression, auditory comprehension, and social/pragmatic interaction are essential for a child to be a successful communicator. Our Speech-Language Pathologists are also highly trained in feeding and swallowing disorders and assistive technology.

Program highlights
Universal exercise unit “Spider Cage”
The Spider Cage is a system of pulleys, straps and splints used to perform a variety of exercises to improve strength, active range of motion and muscle flexibility. The Spider Cage is utilized for the treatment of children with a variety of diagnoses, including cerebral palsy, sensory disturbance, hypotonia, Down syndrome and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
Gross motor gym
The gross motor gym allows children to experience a variety of physical challenges to develop balance, trunk control, improved gait, play skills, spatial awareness and sensory-motor integration. This gym features a zip line, ball pit, proprioceptive crash center, stairs, parallel bars, full-size obstacle course, fine motor station and a walking track.
Sensory gym
The sensory gym provides an opportunity for children with developmental disabilities and sensory processing disorders to enhance their ability to integrate and tolerate movement and environmental stimuli. The variety of suspension equipment and tactile tools allow children to improve their vestibular function, spatial perception and trunk control.
Kitchen and ADL bathroom (Activities of Daily Living)
The kitchen is fully equipped with appliances, providing therapists the ability to integrate food preparation techniques into feeding and dysphagia treatment. The ADL bathroom is equipped with a full-size bathtub, shower, toilet and sink to allow patients and family members to learn to care for themselves or loved ones with physical disabilities.
Therapy rooms
The private therapy rooms are designed to meet all of the patient’s unique needs while promoting improved focus and attention for optimal learning. All therapy rooms include mirrors to promote the teaching of skills and self-awareness, as well as dry-erase boards to assist with visual prompting when needed.
